God gave David a sign to know that He was going out in front of David to win the battle for him. The sign was that David would hear marching in the tops of the poplar trees, meaning God’s invisible army was advancing ahead of David, and David was to follow and fight.
David was given assurance of his victory! Before he ever took one step toward the battle, he was confident that he would win. The Lord was with him, and he knew it. And if the Lord is for you, who can be against you!
Friend, look at the cross right now. With each pound of the nail into the flesh of Jesus, God assures you He is for you! With each gasp of Jesus’ breath, He promises you His presence! With each drop of blood, He guarantees you that sin will not have the last word, that gluttony will not keep you captive, and that you will be free!
Look to the cross! Listen to the sound coming from the tree. Here Jesus’ cry, “It is finished!” and you will know the Lord has gone ahead of you and fought the enemy for you. Now rise and fight, for the cross of Christ assures you success in the battle! “So David did as the Lord commanded him, and he struck down the Philistines all the way from Gibeon to Gezer” (2 Samuel 5:25).
Notice how the cross is God’s promise that He is for you:
“What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?” Romans 8:31-32 (NIV)

Question 6. Why is it important to fight from a position of knowing that God is for you and that the victory is assured? Please share your thoughts.
