Lesson 2: Method of Heart Change
Questions 3 and 4
In our old selves ruled by the flesh, we had hearts of stone, hearts that had evil thoughts which led to our practicing evil deeds. Our old stony hearts were described in Jeremiah 17:9, “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?”
But as believers in Jesus, we have received new hearts! In Christ, we no longer have dead, deceitful, and desperately sick hearts; now, we have hearts that are alive and that beat with love for Jesus who loved us first. Our new hearts no longer flow out evil thoughts but rather “flow rivers of living water.” This new flow is the Holy Spirit within us.
Today, we want to remind ourselves of the method God uses to change our hearts, including how He enables us to walk by the Spirit rather than live according to the flesh. Since we need to think differently about how we approach food, since we need to have hearts that turn away from overeating and laziness, let’s consider what God says about this. Let’s go deeper into the method He uses to change us at the core of our being.
Please read the following passage and answer the questions below:
“Then I will pour out a spirit of grace and prayer on the family of David and on the people of Jerusalem. They will look on me whom they have pierced and mourn for him as for an only son. They will grieve bitterly for him as for a firstborn son who has died.” Zechariah 12:10 (NLT)
