Lesson 11: Walking by the Spirit: Freedom From the Flesh
Question 3
Here is a wonderful truth: our entire attention is to be taken up with walking by the Spirit, for if it is, the result is that we will not gratify the desires of our flesh.
Wow! This is pure gold! Wonderfully freeing truth!
Let me explain: the entirety of religion can be summed up by the words “Don’t Do This!” or “Stop Doing That!” That’s what all religions have in common. And all worldly teaching likewise wants to get us to stop doing something: stop eating the wrong foods, stop indulging. Stop! Stop! Stop!
But in Galatians 5, we learn that we are to live by the Spirit, walk in the Spirit, and keep in step with the Spirit, and if we do, the automatic result will be that we won’t gratify our flesh.
Do you see how powerful this is? Our attention is not to be centered on not doing something, but rather on learning how to walk by the Spirit. This is what we are really studying in this course, for it is surely of great practical help to us to understand what walking by the Spirit is.
But we do have hindrances to our goal. Take note of Galatians 5:17 NIV.
Question 3. According to Galatians 5:17 NIV, what desires are at war within every believer?
