Lesson 18: Walking by the Spirit: the Power of the Spirit
Questions 4 and 5
When you see Jesus stretched out on the cross in love for you, when you see Him removing your sins from you and dying in your place, and you put faith in that message, your faith is resting on God’s power! It’s not mere information that you have, but supernatural, wonder-working power in your life!
Let’s notice this same point in our next passage:
“You foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? Before your very eyes, Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed as crucified. 2 I would like to learn just one thing from you: Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by believing what you heard? 3 Are you so foolish? After beginning by means of the Spirit, are you now trying to finish by means of the flesh? 4 Have you experienced so much in vain—if it really was in vain? 5 So again, I ask, does God give you his Spirit and work miracles among you by the works of the law, or by your believing what you heard?” (Galatians 3:1-5 NIV)
Question 4. How did the Galatians receive the Spirit of God and experience miraculous power in their lives?

Here we see that washing at the cross leads us to walking by the Spirit! Paul shows very clearly that the power of the Spirit accompanies the message of the cross. The Holy Spirit lives at the cross so that when we come and wash at the cross, we receive His supernatural power. The cross brings the presence of Jesus by His Spirit, and His Spirit is powerful over our flesh. Paul's cry "Christ lives in me" came immediately after His declaration, "I have been crucified with Christ..." (Galatians 2:20), thereby connecting the power of the risen Christ to the crucifixion of Christ.
This power is miraculous! In my own life, God's power has knocked down the idol of overeating, gotten me outside of the house to exercise, saved and transformed me, hurt and healed my heart, put me to death, and made me alive. Hallelujah!
