Lesson 26: Worship Flows From What God Has Done For Us

Questions 4 and 5

In heaven, worship of God is connected to the cross of Jesus Christ. Let’s look at this awesome connection in Revelation chapter 5:
Then I saw in the right hand of him who was seated on the throne a scroll written within and on the back, sealed with seven seals. (2) And I saw a mighty angel proclaiming with a loud voice, “Who is worthy to open the scroll and break its seals?” (3) And no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth was able to open the scroll or to look into it, (4) and I began to weep loudly because no one was found worthy to open the scroll or to look into it. Revelation 5:1-4 ESV
A reading of the entirety of the Book of Revelation makes it clear that this “Scroll” that is sealed is “the Book of Life”, containing the names of all who have eternal life (What is the Sealed Book?). John was deeply saddened, to the point of tears that no one was found worthy who could open the book of life. In essence, eternal life was a “sealed book”, closed up to all. No human was worthy to open it. I mean think of it: nobody is worthy to open the book of life, we are all going to die and be lost forever! John weeps at that thought, don't you? How hopeless we all are! On the conveyor belt leading to death and we can't get off, and nobody is found who is worthy to give us life. We're doomed! At the lowest point of our depression, we might have entertained such bleak thoughts ourselves.
But then notice that there actually was a solution:
And one of the elders said to me, “Weep no more; behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has conquered, so that he can open the scroll and its seven seals.” (6) And between the throne and the four living creatures and among the elders I saw a Lamb standing, as though it had been slain, with seven horns and with seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth. Revelation 5:5-6 ESV

Question 4. In what other forms did John see “the Lion of the tribe of Judah”?

The ”Lion of the Tribe of Judah” who was “the Root of David” is a reference to the Messiah (“Root of David”), Jesus Christ (“Lamb of God”). John saw Him as “a Lamb” looking “as though it had been slain”, which is a reference to the cross. This is the same One that John the Baptist saw on earth and then proclaimed, “Look, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world” (John 1:29).

Question 5. According to Revelation 5:5, what had the Lion-like Lamb accomplished?
