Lesson 26: Worship Flows From What God Has Done For Us

Questions 6, 7, 8 and 9

Oh, friend, an answer has been provided, the solution has been found! It's the Lamb! This is how the Bible teaches us the value and the victory of the cross. The Lamb “had conquered”. Do you see it? Jesus destroyed your death through His own. Jesus brought you life! Abundant life! Eternal life! He conquered death for you. Don't weep anymore, my friend. Look at the cross and see not only your forgiveness, not only your cleansing but also your victory and your life! Look at Jesus hanging there, and see what He is actually doing. He is winning the battle for you. He is destroying death for you.
The Bible tells us that the Seed of the woman, who is Jesus, dealt a death blow to the seed of the serpent, who is Satan (Genesis 3:15). On the cross, Jesus conquered our enemy Satan and through His resurrection from the dead, He conquered death.
The slain Lamb opened the Book of Life to anyone who believes, and it is as if He wrote our names down in that Book in His own blood. Look into that book, my friend. Look for your name. Oh, there it is, right there, written in blood, the blood of the Lamb.
Now let’s notice the effect of this good news:
And they sang a new song, saying, “Worthy are you to take the scroll and to open its seals, for you were slain, and by your blood you ransomed people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation, (10) and you have made them a kingdom and priests to our God, and they shall reign on the earth.” (11) Then I looked, and I heard around the throne and the living creatures and the elders the voice of many angels, numbering myriads of myriads and thousands of thousands, (12) saying with a loud voice, “Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing!” (Revelation 5:9-12 ESV, emphasis mine)

Question 6. Please look at Revelation 5:9 for a moment. Why are they singing about the worth of the Lamb? What had the Lamb done to create this kind of worship in them?

By His blood, that is, through His death, Jesus paid the price to ransom us from Satan’s kingdom. He bought us out of despair! He paid the price to ransom us from each and every sin that the devil holds up as being so beautiful. Oh, friend, this is why all of heaven worships Jesus! He ransoms us! "For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus, (6) who gave himself as a ransom for all people." (1 Timothy 2:5-6, emphasis mine).

Question 7. In Revelation 5:11-12, what are the elders, the living creatures, and all the angels doing?

In Revelation chapter 5, all living creatures are worshiping Jesus, and their worship can be attributed to this one statement: “for you were slain, and by your blood, you ransomed people for God.” Do you see how worship is tied in with the cross? These people are worshipping Jesus because He died for them, and in so doing opened the book of life for them. The cross is always what produces genuine worship in the hearts of people, as we see what God has done for us through it.
This passage also shows us what true worship is: It is ascribing worth to Jesus, declaring His value because of what He accomplished for us on the cross.
Dear friend, you were created to worship God. All people were created to worship God. That is one of the main reasons why God gave us life on this earth. God’s purpose in the cross is to cleanse us from sin so that we might be free to worship Him. He gave up the worship of all in heaven to come to this earth and ransom you from Satan's kingdom and power. His purpose was to draw worship out of your heart, for in true worship we are made whole.
Are you seeing this friend? Are you seeing Jesus lifted up to die for you? Are you seeing that He conquered death and opened the book of life for you? That at the cross He is cleansing you, freeing you, ransoming you? Do you see He is doing this because He honestly loves you? Oh yes, He knows all you've done wrong, He knows how you've failed. He sees that you are ashamed. He knows you, He loves you, He gave His life to save you. Love paid the price for mercy. Take a moment and worship and see how the Lamb brings worship.
Oh, what a gift we have in praise and worship, and we can worship at work, at school or college, at home, in church, whenever and wherever we are. Can I encourage you to start building your own playlist of gospel-centered songs? It is very enjoyable to do this.
Finally, take a look at the following video and please notice four things:
  • the subject matter of the song they are singing. Notice that it is the gospel.
  • the full-hearted, intense manner that the entire church is worshipping in with joy unspeakable!
  • that age, gender, and nationality fade away when we worship Jesus.
  • the unity with everyone all looking to Jesus and worshipping Him.
Here it is, take your time with this, and worship through it:
As we finish today I will leave you with this quote from Tim Keller:
“The secret to freedom from enslaving patterns of sin is worship. You need worship. You need great worship. You need weeping worship. You need glorious worship. You need to sense God’s greatness and to be moved by it — moved to tears and moved to laughter — moved by who God is and what he has done for you.”
