Lesson 2: The Work of Jesus is a Mission of Healing Grace
Questions 3 and 4
Thank you for sharing the things that you’ve tried in the past to help with depression. We probably have all tried and experimented with some of the same things.
Today I want to share with you the solution that God has provided to us. Humans are only able to experiment with things to help with depression, some of which can be good and helpful, others dangerous and damaging, but since God is the One Who made us, it makes sense that He has the solution that will fix us. So for the rest of this course, we are going to look at God’s remedy for depression, the gospel, and see together how it applies to us.
So for today, let’s notice from the Scriptures what Jesus Christ came to this earth to do. Please read the following passage of Scripture and provide your thoughts below:
The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me, because the LORD has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, (2) to proclaim the year of the LORD's favor and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn, (3) and provide for those who grieve in Zion— to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair. They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the LORD for the display of his splendor.
Isaiah 61:1-3 NIV
Jesus Christ quoted from this passage in Isaiah 61 (see Luke 4:18-21), and said that the passage applied to Him. So when we read Isaiah 61:1-3 we know that it refers to Jesus Christ. Please keep that in mind as we answer some questions now:

Tori writes, "When Jesus says he will proclaim good news, bound up our broken hearts and release us from darkness, giving us comfort, joy and priase instead of mourning and despair he speaks directly to us."
