Lesson 2: The Work of Jesus is a Mission of Healing Grace

Questions 5, 6 and 7

We are going to look at these things in more detail in the next few lessons, but for now let’s consider that Jesus Christ was sent to this world to mend broken hearts, release prisoners from darkness, to comfort all who mourn, provide for those who grieve, to give us the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair.
Have you experienced a broken heart and feel as though it needs mending? Have you felt locked up in a prison of darkness and wish you could be released? Have you mourned and grieved and wish you could be comforted? Had a spirit of despair and wished you could trade it in for joy and praise?
Friend, this is exactly what Jesus came to do. It was part of His mission to heal your hurting heart, taking special care to bind it up carefully and with much love. Jesus is the Great Physician (Mark 2:17) who knows how to care for your heart and mend it in love. If you’d like to read a wonderful article on Jesus, the Great Physician, you may do that here.
Jesus also has keys which will open your prison of darkness, and He will, Himself, walk you out of that prison into the glorious light, where you can experience the warmth of His presence so deeply in your soul. “The LORD hears the needy and does not despise his captive people” (Psalm 69:33 NIV). By His grace, He will open your prison door and set you free from darkness, even if it has plagued you for as far back as you can remember.
Additionally, Jesus has comfort for you as you mourn or grieve, and He will wipe away your tears with such gentleness and care. “He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death' or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away" (Revelation 21:4 NIV). This is the care and the love that He will show you.
Finally, He will trade your spirit of despair for a garment of praise. This simply means that you will experience such thankfulness for His work in your heart and life, such gratitude for what He does for you that you will automatically want to praise Him. So much, in fact, that you will wear praise like a garment so that it covers you.

Tori writes, "The fact that the Lord hears me and he will comfort me is huge. My whole life I have not experienced this feeling of being cared about and truly loved, and able to be open with my pain and be heard and cared for, so instead I carried it and felt I had to deal with all the burden myself. So the fact that Jesus cares so deeply about me and loves me is powerful."

Question 6. Have you received the gospel of Jesus Christ today in your study of God's Word?

What interests us right now, is how Jesus does all the above things. What is the method He uses? This will be the subject of our next lesson. But for right now I just want you to have hope that Jesus has made it His mission to come to you in healing grace, to bring love and wholeness to your life. He’s doing this for me, and I believe He will for you as well.
