Lesson 3 – Joy

Question 9

With a heart of joy and praise for the Lord, David comes home to bless his house; 2 Samuel 6:21-23 / 1 Chronicles 16:43
Earlier when David came into the city we read:
“And it happened, as the Ark of the covenant of the LORD came to the City of David, that Michal, Saul's daughter, looked through a window and saw King David whirling and playing music; and she despised him in her heart.” [she was not celebrating with her husband] (2 Samuel 6:16; 1 Chronicles 15:29)
“Then David returned to bless his household. And Michal the daughter of Saul came out to meet David, and (out of the abundance of the heart that now despised David) said, "How glorious was the king of Israel today, uncovering himself today in the eyes of the maids of his servants, as one of the base fellows shamelessly uncovers himself!" (21) So David said to Michal, "It was before the LORD, who chose me instead of your father and all his house, to appoint me ruler over the people of the LORD, over Israel. Therefore I will play music before the LORD. (22) "And I will be even more undignified than this, and will be humble in my own sight. But as for the maidservants of whom you have spoken, by them, I will be held in honor." (2 Samuel 6:20-22 NKJV)
David did not allow the unjust criticism and exaggerations of Michal's bitterness to turn his joy and duty before the Lord. David had removed his royal robes and was rejoicing in humility with the rest of the singers, and not as some “important king” before the Lord.
The Lord brought shame and judgment upon Michal:
“Therefore Michal, the daughter of Saul, had no children to the day of her death.” (2 Samuel 6:20-23 NKJV)

9. Have you ever "looked down" on others in their worship of the Lord? Have you despised others for their joy that you are not able or want to join? Be careful – the Lord could cause you to be barren.
