Lesson 5 – Longsuffering
Question 2
Example of God's longsuffering toward people
“who formerly were disobedient, when once the Divine longsuffering waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight souls, were saved through water.” (1 Peter 3:20 NKJV)
God's longsuffering (holding off His wrath) [120 years] resulted in Noah's salvation and his family.
“What if God, wanting to show His wrath and to make His power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath prepared for destruction.” (Romans 9:22 NKJV)
God holds off His wrath and anger by being longsuffering toward others' wickedness – to make His power known.
“The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.” (2 Peter 3:9 NKJV)
God holds off bringing judgment so those who will believe will repent.
"For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. (17) "For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. (18) "He who believes in Him is not condemned; BUT he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. ... (35) "The Father loves the Son, and has given all things into His hand. (36) "He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him." (John 3:16-18, 35-36 NKJV)
God loves all – and His longsuffering is seen as the Gospel is offered to all that will believe. But there is a day coming that those who do not believe will experience the wrath of God, and His longsuffering ends.
2. Have you seen the Lord's longsuffering in waiting for you to trust and believe in Him? Not merely for your salvation, but in your growth and walk with Jesus?
