Job – a model of Christ's patience and longsuffering
“Therefore be patient, brethren, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, waiting patiently for it until it receives the early and latter rain. (8) You also be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand. (9) Do not grumble against one another, brethren, lest you be condemned. Behold, the Judge is standing at the door! (10) My brethren, take the prophets, who spoke in the name of the Lord, as an example of suffering and patience. (11) Indeed we count them blessed who endure. You have heard of the perseverance of Job and seen the end intended by the Lord--that the Lord is very compassionate and merciful.” (James 5:7-11 NKJV)
Job: losses everything, falsely accused as to the reason for his loss by his friends, and in the end, restored. (A glimpse of the Gospel?)
Job asks many times, "Why have You forsaken me?" like Jesus asked from the Cross, "Why have You forsaken me?"
Let's do a brief overview of Job: Satan was permitted to destroy and kill
“Then Job arose, tore his robe, and shaved his head; and he fell to the ground and worshiped. (21) And he said: "Naked I came from my mother's womb, And naked shall I return there. The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away; Blessed be the name of the LORD." (22) In all this, Job did not sin nor charge God with wrong.” (Job 1:20-22 NKJV)
“And he took for himself a potsherd with which to scrape himself while he sat in the midst of the ashes. (9) Then his wife said to him, "Do you still hold fast to your integrity? Curse God and die!" (10) But he said to her, "You speak as one of the foolish women speaks. Shall we indeed accept good from God, and shall we not accept adversity?" In all this, Job did not sin with his lips.” (Job 2:8-10 NKJV)
Yet in all the affliction from Satan and Job's friends – Job had one hope - Job 19– Job describes his suffering, which reflects the suffering of Christ. Yet, Job can say:
“For I know that my Redeemer lives, And He shall stand at last on the earth.” (Job 19:25 NKJV)
Job 42: Job suffered a significant loss - everything except his life. He lost his family; he lost his health; he lost his standing in the community. Yet in all this, Job remained faithful to the Lord.
God's judgment on the three friends:
“Do not grumble against one another, brethren, lest you be condemned. Behold, the Judge is standing at the door!” (James 5:9 NKJV)
Job was restored, and Job interceded for his friends.
“Indeed we count them blessed who endure. You have heard of the perseverance of Job and seen the end intended by the Lord--that the Lord is very compassionate and merciful.” (James 5:11 NKJV)
Everything was restored; Job's wife gave birth to 10 more children.
Job is a story of a shadow type of the Gospel. Seeing his loss, his suffering, and being restored to greater glory.
