Lesson 8 – Faithfulness

Question 1

What does faithfulness mean?

Preparing for this lesson has been an exciting word study for me. The word is πίστις pístis, [G4102], which is translated most of the time as faith in the New Testament. It comes from the root word from πείθω peíthō G3982; meaning to persuade, to be induced to believe.
This word faithfulness is the word for faith πίστις pístis. In its biblical sense, faith is always received by believers only (never self-generated). Faith is always the gift (work) of God, from the moment of the regeneration of our hearts and conversion to the end of our sanctification, and we see Jesus face to face.
Consider these verses from Ezekiel. Listen how many times God says: "I will…"
"Then I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean; I will cleanse you from all your filthiness and from all your idols. (26) "I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. (27) "I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will keep My judgments and do them." (Ezekiel 36:25-27 NKJV)
Ezekiel is pointing us to the Gospel, Jesus' death, burial, and resurrection:
  • Only there at the Cross are we made clean from ALL our filthiness.
  • Only at the Cross are we given a new heart and receive the Holy Spirit of promise.
  • Only at the Cross do we find the power to walk in obedience because of the resurrection.
And it is God who said, "I will…" do these things in the heart of His people.

1. Do you see how it is God who will work in you? Can you share when you first came to faith in Jesus Christ?
