Lesson 9 – Gentleness

Question 3

So, let’s look first at the:
Inward quality of a gentle or meek character:
Meekness toward God is that disposition of spirit in which we accept His dealings with us as useful, and therefore without disputing or resisting. In the OT, the meek are those wholly relying on God rather than their strength to defend against injustice. We saw Joseph show this kind of meekness and gentleness toward his brothers.
“Joseph said to them, “Do not be afraid, for am I in the place of God? (20) “But as for you, you meant evil against me; but God meant it for good, in order to bring it about as it is this day, to save many people alive.” (Genesis 50:19-20 NKJV)
Moses was described as meek (KJV) or humble when being attacked by Miriam and Aaron. God’s testimony:
“(Now the man Moses was very humble, more than all men who were on the face of the earth.)” (Numbers 12:3 NKJV)
This meek humility is found in the attitude of thankfulness:
“in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” (1 Thessalonians 5:18 NKJV)
As we make our focus on Jesus and the Cross, recognizing His sovereign control of all things in life – we can and ought to humbly submit with thankfulness.
Meekness is not weakness! Biblical meekness (4236/praótēs) shows God-paced, God-defined behavior which acts as the Lord Jesus acts, i.e., Gentleness or meekness does not “act out” (“flying off the handle” with human-based anger.
“Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 2:5 NKJV).
We will come back later to Philippians 2.
“Blessed are the meek, For they shall inherit the earth.” (Matthew 5:5 NKJV)
It is the gentle submissiveness to the divine will in all of life. This meekness is a qualify of faith and believing unto salvation.
“Therefore, lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.” (James 1:21 NKJV)

3. How has the Lord worked this fruit of gentleness or meekness in your life? What circumstances has the Lord used to humble you?
