Lesson 9 – Gentleness
Question 4
Let’s look at the outward quality of gentleness:
Outward quality of gentleness or meekness toward others:
This meekness then toward evil people means knowing God is permitting the injuries they inflict, that He uses them to purify His elect, and that He will deliver His elect in His time.
“The eyes of the LORD are on the righteous, And His ears are open to their cry. (16) The face of the LORD is against those who do evil, To cut off the remembrance of them from the earth. (17) The righteous cry out, and the LORD hears, And delivers them out of all their troubles. (18) The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, And saves such as have a contrite spirit. (19) Many are the afflictions of the righteous, But the LORD delivers him out of them all.” (Psalm 34:15-19 NKJV)
Meekness - Πραοτης· Mildness, indulgence toward the weak and erring, patient suffering of injuries without feeling a spirit of revenge, an even balance of all tempers and passions, the entire opposite to anger.
Again Joseph, Moses, Paul, and especially Jesus are models of this meekness and gentleness. And Jesus is not only the model – but He is the source of that meekness and gentleness. We will find this is where the power comes from.
