Lesson 5 – Longsuffering

Question 4

How does the Christian show and demonstrate this Holy Spirit fruit of longsuffering?

How does the Spirit develop the capacity of longsuffering in the soul? How does He make man able to bear losses, disappointments, aggravations, griefs, and all the ills that the flesh endures?
We answer that the Spirit accomplishes this effect by teaching us the relative value of things in light of the Gospel and viewing Jesus from the Cross;
Longsuffering; is not so much a patient waiting for good things to come, for more grace, and glory, through the Spirit; [waiting in line to check out, waiting for a light to change, waiting for your number to be called to get your food, This is NOT longsuffering - but….
Longsuffering is patiently bearing and enduring present evils with joyfulness, being strengthened by the Spirit with all might, according to His glorious power found at the resurrection; being slow to anger, ready to forgive injuries, put up with insults, and bear with one another: which is usually accompanied with gentleness, humanity, friendliness, courteousness, shown both in words, gestures, and actions; in imitation of the gentleness of Christ and highlighted there on the Cross, living in the wisdom of that heavenly doctrine of the Gospel (Jesus' death, burial, and resurrection). Longsuffering is to defer anger and the ability to bear injuries.
Longsuffering.—is to moderate our anger and desire for revenge when many and great wrongs are done to us. Longsuffering is a demonstration of the power of the Gospel within the life of a Christian.
