Lesson 7 – Goodness
Question 1
What is Goodness?
ἀγαθωσύνη agathōsýnē, [G19] goodness - agathos-synē; from root word [G18] (agathos); good: goodness, the idea of bigheartedness:—goodness. This particular word is only used four times in the New Testament.
Good (agathos)
Let’s look at the root word good [G18] (agathos), so we can understand [G19] goodness - agathos-synē.
"Even so, every good [G18] (agathos)tree bears good [G2570] (kalos) fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. (18) "A good [G18] (agathos) tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good [G2570] (kalos) fruit.” (Matthew 7:17-18 NKJV)
The first good [G18] (agathos) is the idea of a good constitution, upright, honorable. We would say that a house is has a good foundation.
The second good [G2570] (kalos) is the idea something is beautiful, excellent, precious. The idea of the fruit or the result that came out of what was good [G18] (agathos) This second good [G2570] (kalos) is the word used in the LXX (Greek Old Testament) in reference to God calling each day of creation as good [G2570] (kalos) and was very good [G2570] (kalos) at the end of the sixth day. (Genesis 1: 1-31) It was good because the creation came out of a God who was upright, honorable, and of good constitution.
