Fishers of Men

Day 4 - Reflect on being called to serve

Waking up early this morning, I knew the Lord wanted me to focus on Him. So I quieted myself and, in silence, waited for Him to speak to me. In a quiet voice, I heard Him say, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” (Matthew 4:19) I have heard this verse my whole life and have known that Jesus called the disciples to give up their fishing and follow Jesus. Little did they know what they would do and learn from the Savior of the world.
They learned to trust in Jesus and to feel His great love. They learned to stand boldly and preach the Gospel of Jesus to all that they met. They experienced the cross firsthand and saw the risen Savior. They truly became fishers of men.
But what does this early morning call mean to me today? I have been a believer for most of my life. In His strength, I have tried to live my life to show others my love of my Lord. I have had the privilege to talk to many about Jesus. I pray that my life has honored Him.
So why now, I ask myself, am I hearing this call from my Lord? Reflecting on this verse for a few days, the Lord has shown me that my day must start at the cross. For the cross is where my faith in Jesus and His finished work started. So daily seeing the cross centers my focus on my Savior. I pivot my life to follow my Savior in every moment of my day.
Ephesians 2:8-9 tells us, “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.” These verses remind me that nothing I do can give me eternal salvation. My salvation is a gift from God. The cross is so important in my life. So following my Lord is what I must do.
As I consider the second part of Matthew 4:19 - “I will make you fishers of men,” I am praying and listening to my Savior to show me how He wants to use me to do this. It is exciting as I feel He is guiding me into new areas to let my light shine into the darkness of this world. (Matthew 5: 15-16)
As followers of Christ, let us follow Him always! Let us, with great joy, serve Him to show others His great love, mercy, and grace.
