Dear friends, we are dearly loved children of God who were purchased through the fragrant sacrifice and offering of Jesus. He was lifted up, giving Himself to us while being nailed to the cross. Believers are therefore able to walk in the way of love because, at the cross, we have been born of God, who is love. We are learning to walk in the way of love, the same love we received from God, and as we come to the cross, we see how Jesus walked in love by carrying His cross up the mountain like a Lamb that was led to the slaughter. Jesus walked in the way of love all the way up the mountain and proved His love to us by laying down His life for us.
“Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one's life for one's friends.” John 15:13 NIV
“And this is love: that we walk in obedience to his commands. As you have heard from the beginning, his command is that you walk in love. 2 John 1:6
John is not talking about the Ten Commandments here in this passage, but the command to love one another. As we walk in the way of love, this affects the way we treat each other as husband and wife. It affects the way we respond to each other. It affects the way we love each other, and it affects the way we speak to each other. Before we were crucified with Christ, we were walking in the way of the flesh and were therefore sharp and unloving with our words. This is not to say that we cannot ever walk in the flesh again, but that our new identity and desires are those of who we are in Christ, bearing the fruit of love, which is a fruit of the Spirit.
