Lesson 8 Exchanging Brokenness for the Fountain of Life

Question 2

In the above passage, we see that the nation of Israel had become idolaters (worshipping something other than the Living God). They had exchanged the true God for idols (similar to when they made a golden calf to worship in Exodus 32), and this was appalling, for God is “glorious” and idols are “worthless”. And then the Scriptures use an analogy:
God is a “spring of living water” whereas idols are “broken cisterns that cannot hold water.”
Consider for a moment the fact that God is a “spring of living water.”
  • God is described as a spring.
A spring is satisfying and refreshing, ever fresh and new. This means that God is filling and stimulating, invigorating and deeply satisfying to all who learn to drink from Him.
A spring is always fresh and always new. It’s not like a well where the water can become stagnant or stopped up, or even poisoned, a spring always brings new and fresh water from an unseen source. This means that God will always surprise us with fresh insights, with new and unique blessings from the pages of His Word. God always keeps it fresh as He is a “Spring.”
  • God is described as a spring of living water.
God’s “living water” makes us live when we drink it.
It’s possible that you are like I was, looking to gaming, the Internet, social media, etc. to find life! I wanted excitement and fun, something to get rid of boredom and emptiness, something to give me acceptance and love; in other words, I was looking for life!
But this is precisely what God is to everyone who believes in Him: He is a spring of living water. When we learn to drink of Him we find that we now have life. We are no longer bored or empty, no longer need a thrill or a rush, or any other thing to provide excitement. We are drinking living water, and it gives us life, makes us feel alive!
Revelation 21:6 NIV  He said to me: "To the thirsty I will give water without cost from the spring of the water of life.”
Revelation 22:17 NIV  The Spirit and the bride say, "Come!" And let the one who hears say, "Come!" Let the one who is thirsty come; and let the one who wishes take the free gift of the water of life.

Question 2. According to Revelation 21:6 and Revelation 22:17, what is God able to do for you?
