Lesson 16 Sinking in Media Addiction, Lifted Up by Jesus!

Question 4

Peter sunk when he took his eyes off of Jesus and saw the wind and the waves. No doubt he was scared, thinking he was going to sink into the lake and drown. It was a very frightening experience.
When we lose sight of Jesus, becoming distracted by other things we will sink.
Maybe we sink into media, maybe we sink into other time-wasters or addictions that begin to consume us.
The reason this happens is that we were meant to be consumed by Jesus Christ; that is, to have our world revolve around Him like the earth revolves around the sun.
But when we get our eyes off Jesus and our world begins to revolve around something else, we sink.
According to Matthew 14:30, when Peter saw that he was sinking he cried out to Jesus, “Lord save me!” and Jesus immediately lifted him up out of the water. And this is what Jesus does for us, too. He is the Creator of all things, He is Lord over everything including people, and when we cry out to Him, He comes and lifts us up.
A simple, “Lord, save me!” brings out all the compassion in Jesus, He comes quickly to rescue us and lift us up.
I remember a time in my life when I was discouraged over so many things. I was going through a very difficult time and I was turning to media and other things to try to escape all the upsetting things in my life, to try to forget how difficult things were. Finally, things got so bad in my life that I sat in my room one day and just cried out to Jesus. I said something like, “Lord, you can fix this mess I’m in, or you can fix me or both. Lord, please save me.”
And He did. This is where Jesus really shines, where He uses His power to come and rescue those who cry out to Him. This is also what He did for His people, the nation of Israel when they were enslaved to the Egyptians. Notice this passage:
Exodus 3:7-9 NLT  Then the LORD told him, “I have certainly seen the oppression of my people in Egypt. I have heard their cries of distress because of their harsh slave drivers. Yes, I am aware of their suffering.  (8)  So I have come down to rescue them from the power of the Egyptians and lead them out of Egypt into their own fertile and spacious land…  (9)  Look! The cry of the people of Israel has reached me, and I have seen how harshly the Egyptians abuse them.

Question 4. Maybe you’ve felt like you were sinking into the deep waters of media addiction or some other area of darkness. Have you cried out to Jesus and asked Him to save you? If not, feel free to do so right here, and your mentor will pray with you as well. If yes, then tell us how Jesus responded to your cry for help.
