Lesson 1 The Ministry of Mentoring
Questions 4, 5, and 6
All prospective mentors with Setting Captives Free must agree not to use psychological methodologies in mentoring with us, but rather must use the gospel of Jesus Christ and the Word of God only. This means we don’t use terms such as “addict” or “addicted”, “acting out”, “recovery”, “12-steps,” etc. Instead, we use “sinning”, “being rescued” or “set free by Jesus Christ.” A Christian's emphasis is on death and resurrection, not addiction and recovery.
Dear brother or sister, by now, you have read in the course lessons how ministering at the cross is very different from 12 step type recovery programs and psychology. The following counsel is to guide those who have been in the past, or who are currently involved in programs like AA, Celebrate Recovery, Overcomer's Anonymous, any other 12 step groups, or counseling based on psychological principles.
Setting Captives Free adheres to the gospel approach that Paul used when he was leading and counseling the early church: "When I first came to you, dear brothers and sisters, I didn't use lofty words and impressive wisdom to tell you God's secret plan. For I decided that while I was with you, I would forget everything except Jesus Christ, the One who was crucified" (1 Corinthians 2:1-2). The message of the cross is powerful for salvation and sanctification. The message of Christ's death and resurrection brings lasting freedom; it does not need to be augmented.
In another context, Jesus said, "No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other; you will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money." (Matthew 6:24) Similarly, we cannot minister two opposite messages without eventually becoming conflicted. So, we ask you to consider the following counsel prayerfully.
Question 4 - Do you understand that we ask prospective mentors with Setting Captives Free to leave or avoid working in 12-step, recovery, or secular counseling programs to join us in declaring the wonder of freedom in washing at the cross?
