Lesson 2 Purposes for Slavery to Sin: That We Might Experience Grace

Questions 1 and 2

Greetings friend, and welcome back to your course.
As we consider the harsh conditions of slavery to sin, things can seem bleak and hopeless. I felt weaker each time I fell to temptation; I experienced shame; my relationships suffered even to the point of breaking; job performance suffered and so much more. It seemed all bad!

Question 1. What are some of the effects of your own experience with pornography, lust or other forms of impurity?

Over the next few days of this course, we will look at some of the biblical reasons why we become enslaved (not “addicted”), and as we study we’ll discover that all along God’s plan for us included even our sin and failures, and that His aim was His glory and our good. So here is the outline for the next few days:
Purposes for slavery to sin:
  1. That we might experience grace.
  2. That we might become broken and humbled.
  3. That we might recognize our need to wash at the cross and walk by the Spirit.
  4. That we might learn to war against our flesh.
So, let’s examine the first point on our list: that God might give us grace.
In Romans 11, Paul discusses the history of the nation of Israel, and he shows explicitly the reason why that nation became disobedient to God. Let’s look at it together:
Romans 11:30-32 ESV For just as you were at one time disobedient to God but now have received mercy because of their disobedience, (31) so they too have now been disobedient in order that by the mercy shown to you they also may now receive mercy. (32) For God has consigned all to disobedience, that he may have mercy on all.

Question 2. According to Romans 11:30, what is the result of the disobedience of the nation of Israel?
