Lesson 16 Warring Against the Flesh: Walking in the Light
Questions 3 and 4
Yes, God rescued you from darkness. And this rescue was from the “dominion” or “power” of darkness. In considering “the power of darkness,” I can recall so clearly the grip sin had on me: I would hide in the darkness to view pornography; I would sneak downstairs late at night to sex chat on the Internet, I would commit sexual impurity under cover of darkness. And then I would hide, deceive and lie, all to cover up what I had done.
Question 3. What was the power of darkness like for you? We’re not asking for details, but what this power was like in your life?

If you can recall your time under the control of this darkness then you know what a death grip it had, and you surely must realize it is not something we can escape from by ourselves, or through mere accountability. Darkness is that place where sin reigns and where Satan holds us bound in chains that we make for ourselves by lust and rebellion (Psalm 107:10-12). It is a kingdom, an authority, from which we cannot break free. It is a power that enslaves and imprisons us.
But God rescued us! Think of this rescue for a moment: a firefighter will “suit up” to go into a burning building, at the risk of his own life, to rescue people out of a house fire and bring them to safety.
Even so, God put on a human body and came right into this world of sin and darkness, and at the cross, Jesus “became sin for us” (2 Corinthians 5:21).
At the cross it became pitch black for three hours, as Jesus had fully entered into the darkness: “From noon on, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon” (Matthew 27:45 ISV). He did this to rescue you from sin’s darkness, to deliver you from Satan’s kingdom and to redeem you out of captivity. Can you hardly take in such an unspeakable gift as this?
A firefighter rescues, not merely because it is his job, but hopefully because he genuinely cares about people. Even more, Jesus, the “Light of the World” (John 8:12) entered into darkness to rescue you because of His great love for you. “Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends” (John 15:13 ESV).
Question 4. Have you thought about the love of Jesus in entering the darkness to rescue you? What thoughts would you verbalize to Jesus if talking with Him just now?
