Lesson 23 Washing at the Cross Brings Cleansing and Healing
Question 6
Now let’s now summarize this passage with three simple points. We must respond to the gospel by being:
Contrite and Humble: It was humbling for the leper to acknowledge he was unclean, and that he had to dunk in a river. Naaman had to let go of his pride and anger and embrace the word of God. It is humbling for us to admit that we are unclean and impure, sinners before a holy God. It is humbling for us to look at the cross and see our sin crucifying our Savior.
Completely Surrendered: It did not make sense to Naaman to dunk in a polluted river to get clean. Likewise, it is not logical to wash in Jesus’ blood to remove our sin. We want to retain our pride, pay for it somehow, follow a list of rules, do something! We must completely surrender our way of thinking and instead, come to a blood-stained cross and there receive God’s grace.
Continually Washing: Coming to the cross, and hearing the gospel is not a one-time thing. Naaman had to dunk over and over, time and again. We must hear the message of the cross continually.
