Lesson 29 Warring Against the Flesh, Praying God’s Word

Question 3

Today, we will focus on the battle strategy of praying God’s Word. Prayer is a powerful defense against the powers of darkness and absolutely necessary for seeking God’s counsel on how to win the war that we are waging. “Plans are established by seeking advice; so if you wage war, obtain guidance” (Proverbs 20:18). As we pray God’s Word back to Him, God’s Holy Spirit applies the Truth to our hearts, and we gain understanding on how to win the war.
Any specific battle plan that has ever come to me from the Lord has come to light when I’ve been praying His Word back to Him, and by His Spirit He communicates the specific way to fight, and He gives me the exact plan needed to win the war that very day.
This is very different than following the counsel of man to complete a list of steps or setting up fences of my own devising (which can easily be bypassed in the heat of temptation). No, this is God speaking to me through His Word as I seek Him in prayer, and THIS is what you and I need to fight and win!
So, today, let’s prepare ourselves to seek God’s advice and obtain His guidance as we pray His Word to Him. Today I’ve chosen Ephesians 6:10-17 to pray with you. Let’s read it first:
Ephesians 6:10-17 (NIV) Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
I’ll pray the first verse, Ephesians 6:10:
Father in heaven, you have told me to be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power. As I see you, Lord Jesus, dying on the cross in weakness, it breaks my heart, but it also makes me want to fight the sin that put you there! As I see you rising from the dead in mighty power, I know that you have given me that same power that rose you from the dead (Romans 8:11). Lord, help me to obey you here, to be strong against the devil, give me the exact way to live as your strong soldier today, and to fight in your strength! Help me not to believe the lie of the devil that there is no hope to overcome impurity, seeing that you already defeated Satan on the cross, made a public spectacle out of him and triumphed over him by the cross (Colossians 2:13-15).
