Lesson 47 Washing At The Cross: Jesus Purchased Your Victory

Question 7

God, the Holy Spirit, is careful to record some details in this story for us. The first one is the physical position of Samson in his death: his arms outstretched, his right arm on one pillar and his left on the other. The second one is that it was through his death that Samson destroyed the enemy. And the third detail is that he killed 3,000 people through his death.
In the gospel, we see Jesus hanging on the cross, arms outstretched, dying as our Substitute. He then breathes His last breath, and we are told that it is through death that He destroyed our enemy (Hebrews 2:14).
And finally, after His death and the giving of the Holy Spirit, 3,000 people were given life in Jesus’ Name. Through Samson’s death, 3,000 people died, but through Jesus’ death, 3,000 people were given eternal life (Acts 2:38-41).
Yes, your “Samson” had His hands raised in victory, nailed wide open, and He died on the cross for you. In so doing, He destroyed your enemy, the devil, giving him a mortal wound to the head. He has won the battle for you; He has purchased your victory with His blood.
Notice how our victory over sin and death comes “through our Lord Jesus Christ” in 1 Corinthians 15:54-58:
1 Corinthians 15:54-58 ESV When the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written: “Death is swallowed up in victory.” (55) “O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?” (56) The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. (57) But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Death is pictured here as a bee that stung our Lord Jesus, giving Him a fatal sting, but in “stinging” Jesus the bee of death lost its stinger and can no longer harm you! God has given you the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
John 5:24 ESV Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment but has passed from death to life.
