Lesson 54 Warring Against the Flesh: Justified by Jesus’ Resurrection
Questions 1 and 2
Greetings friend, and welcome back!
When I was in bondage to pornography, I was continually looking for a way to be right with God. I knew my sin was an offense to a holy God, and I wanted to try to make up for it, to do enough good things to offset the bad.
So I studied the Bible, memorized Scripture, taught Bible classes, ministered to prisoners in the county jail, went on mission trips to Africa and other countries; continually trying to make myself acceptable to God, to justify myself in His sight. I thought that if I did enough good works, possibly God would overlook the bad.

Did you know that believing in the resurrection of Jesus Christ justifies you before God? It’s true! When Jesus rose from the dead, you were justified! Notice this verse: “He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification” (Romans 4:25).
Paul now uses an illustration from the Old Testament to teach this very point. At the time when God promised a child to Abraham and Sarah, they were old, and Sarah’s womb was “dead.” But notice how Abraham was justified before God:
Romans 4:19-25 NIV Without weakening in his faith, he (Abraham) faced the fact that his body was as good as dead—since he was about a hundred years old—and that Sarah’s womb was also dead. (20) Yet he did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God, (21) being fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised. (22) This is why “it was credited to him as righteousness.” (23) The words “it was credited to him” were written not for him alone, (24) but also for us, to whom God will credit righteousness—for us who believe in him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead. (25) He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification.
Question 2. How is Abraham’s body and Sarah’s womb described in Romans 4:19?
