Lesson 54 Warring Against the Flesh: Justified by Jesus’ Resurrection

Questions 3 and 4

God had just promised that Abraham and Sarah would have a son, yet Abraham was old, and his body “was as good as dead,” and Sarah’s womb was dead. She was past the age of childbearing, seemingly beyond hope of ever having children.
Likewise, there Jesus was, dead in the tomb, having laid dead for three days and three nights, beyond all hope. Sarah’s womb, and Jesus in the tomb, both dead!
But the beautiful thing is that God’s promise to Abraham and Sarah did not depend on Abraham and Sarah, but rather on God’s power! God could promise them a son and He had power to perform what He promised!
And Abraham had faith in God’s promise! God-given faith! He believed in the power of God to bring life out of death, and “he was strengthened in his faith.” Faith is a powerful thing! And so Isaac was born; life came from a dead womb.

Question 3. According to Romans 4:21NIV, why did Abraham not waver in his faith in God’s promise? Abraham was “fully persuaded that to do what he had promised.”

Abraham believed that God had the power to bring life out of a dead womb. His faith informed him that God could overcome the natural, and His power could bring about the supernatural. He was not looking to the “facts” of the case, but instead, he was living by faith. Yes, his body was as good as dead, and Sarah’s womb was dead, but what is that to God? Abraham believed that God’s power can overcome the natural, for God is a supernatural God.

Question 4. According to Romans 4:22, what was Abraham credited when he believed in the power of God to bring life out of death?
