Lesson 59 Overcoming Through Testimony

Question 7

Job 33:27-28 show us the three points of a good testimony:
  1. “I have sinned and perverted what was right.”
In this part of our testimony, we share with others the wrongs we were involved in, the sin we committed. We don’t want to go into detail, to plant thoughts in the minds of others, but we want to share enough to be able to have our hearers identify with us.
For example, “I was involved in pornography and sexual impurity. It had a death-grip on me, and I could not escape from it. I was captive to the next image, the next sexual thrill, the next illicit relationship.”
2. “I did not get what I deserved. God has delivered me from going down to the pit.”
In the second part of our testimony, we tell of the work of God in our lives. We communicate His grace to us in not treating us as our sins deserve (Psalm 103:10). He has been merciful and gracious to us. Jesus has ransomed us through the price of His own life, and now He mediates for us. Because of His death, we are healed, restored, and taught how to live uprightly in light of the gospel.
I would say, “Jesus went to the cross, shed His blood to pay for my sins, and now speaks with the Father on my behalf. He has paid with His life to ransom me from my sins and has shed His own blood for my soul. His Holy Spirit works in my heart, showing me how precious Jesus is, bringing me to repentance and lifting me out of the pit of the sin I was in. It’s this change of heart that has meant so much to me, and I receive it at the foot of the cross!”
3. “I shall live to enjoy the light of life.”
In this final part of our testimony, we share the results of the work of God in our lives.
“I am living free from life-dominating sin! Not that I don’t sin, just that I’m not in bondage to it anymore. God has changed my heart, set me free, released me from the prison I was in, rescued me from the power of darkness. Not only that, but He is healing my marriage. I didn’t think our marriage would survive, but He is giving grace to my wife as well as to me, and we are in the process of healing and being restored. I’m also becoming the father God wants me to be to my kids, as I’m able to focus on them now and be involved in their lives. He has changed my heart, and I’m loving living free!”
In short, “I sinned, Jesus redeemed me at the cross, I will live!”
Our objective is to give others hope that Jesus can set them free from pornography, that the gospel has the power to release them from adultery, and/or that the Holy Spirit can release them from the sex options that the culture suggests but which leaves them in bondage. In short, Jesus changes hearts through the gospel.
We don’t share that we are “perfect” because we never will be in this life, we still sin and still struggle with many things. But we do use the gospel (should never leave this out!) and share our own experiences of how it has and continues to transform us.
In the next lesson, you will have an opportunity to share your testimony with many people. I also encourage you to share your testimony in church or with friends, let them know how precious Jesus is becoming to you and the changes He is making in your heart and life.
Please take some time to consider the three points above, maybe write out your testimony ahead of time. You will be given the option of sharing it in the next lesson.
Listen to how Sam shares all three points.
