Lesson 24 God’s Grace Abounds at The Cross

Questions 5 and 6

“This matter arose because some false believers had infiltrated our ranks to spy on the freedom we have in Christ Jesus and to make us slaves. 5 We did not give in to them for a moment so that the truth of the gospel might be preserved for you.” Galatians 2:4-5 NIV
Dear friend, we cannot give in to those who want to pervert the grace of God, whether it’s turning it into a license to sin or trying to bring us back under the law and its slavery. We must “preserve the gospel” not only for future generations but also because it is the message given to the church to take into all the world. The truth of the gospel must never be perverted! And never be used as “freedom” to live in sin, because believers “...are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer?” Romans 6:2 NIV
Jesus went under the curse, “For all who rely on the works of the law are under a curse” (Galatians 3:10) for us while He hung on the tree (Galatians 3:13) even though He continued to do “everything written in the Book of the Law” (Galatians 3:10). He is the end and fulfillment of the law (Romans 10:4). Out of love for you and me, He went to the cross where He was lifted up as a “lawbreaker” and “Passover Lamb” who loved us to the end of His life by hanging in our place. He was under the judgment of sin for us and received our death sentence on the cross. We were “passed over,” and God’s firstborn was put to death, and the firstfruits rose from the dead (1 Corinthians 15:20).
If you ever wonder if God loves you, all you have to do is look to the cross of Christ and see the grace of God and the love of Jesus vividly displayed. Look at Him going to the cross and loving us to the end of His life (John 13:1). With each blow of the hammer that pounded the nails deeper into His hands and feet, He loved you. He loved you while under the agony of death where His heart was pierced, His love poured out, and with those wounds, He bandaged and healed you. Jesus loved us to the end with His last breath and heartbeat. This is the grace of God that stirs our hearts and creates new desires within us. Do you see how Jesus went under the curse of sin and death to love you and lift you up? He went to the cross not only to save you with His blood but to sanctify, wash and cleanse you through His death and powerful resurrection!
“Tell me, you who want to be under the law, are you not aware of what the law says? 22 For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by the slave woman and the other by the free woman. 23 His son by the slave woman was born according to the flesh, but his son by the free woman was born as the result of a divine promise.” Galatians 4:21-23 NIV
