Lesson 38 Washing At The Cross: Our Victory Over Satan
Questions 5 and 6
So think of it like this:
Jesus was judged in your place, condemned instead of you, and suffered the punishment of death for you. This is Isaiah 53.
You are now vindicated by God Himself; that is, you are justified, delivered, and set free! This is Isaiah 54.
This goes right along with our central passage of study in Colossians 2:14-15:
Jesus was charged with your legal indebtedness and paid it in full at His death. This is Colossians 2:14.
Satan now has nothing with which to accuse you, as Jesus’ death has shut his mouth forever. Jesus triumphed over Satan at the cross and vindicated you through His death. This is Colossians 2:15.
There is an old saying that goes, “when Satan reminds you of your past, you just remind him of his future.” But that’s not how we gain victory over him. We win like this:
When Satan reminds us of our past, we remember the cross of Christ. We preach to ourselves that the cross canceled our debt of sin, removed all guilt, and triumphed over Satan.
At the cross, our “filthy rags” of sin and self-righteousness (Isaiah 64:6) were removed from us, and we put on the “garments of salvation” (Isaiah 61:10) and are now clothed in the robe of Christ’s righteousness (2 Corinthians 5:21). Now Satan cannot say one word against us.
Let’s notice this same truth from another passage:
Romans 8:33-34 NIV Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. (34) Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us.
Question 5. According to Romans 8:33 who can bring any charges against you?
